Beginning its journey on October 24, 1958 with the opening of its first outlet, a children’s fashion store in Jakarta, Matahari went on to open Indonesia’s first modern department store in 1972. We have a policy of hiring locally as far as possible, and the majority of staff at each of our stores are from the local area. The existence of a large format Matahari store has a significant, positive impact on the local economy, particularly in second and third tier cities around the country, from the absorption of local labour, products and services to the payment of local taxes.
